    Introduction
    The modern age in which we are living calls for modern and versatile musical instruments. And the Philicorda is a leader in this field. This Philicorda is extremely suitable for the performance of all kinds of music - both modern and classical. This is enabled by the extensive range of tone-colour variations which the instrument offers. Play it in the living room and the sphere of real home music making comes to life again.
    The Philicorda is a compact instrument requiring the minimum space. It is also easily transportable. By its tasteful design the Philicorda will fit into any interior decoration scheme.


    Installation
    Before connecting the instrument to the mains supply, lay the Philicorda upside-down on a soft surface. Check whether the instrument is set to the correct mains voltage. The number visible through the opening of the voltage adapter (A) should correspond to the local mains votage. If not, turn it with a coin until the correct number appears. The identification label with serial number is placed next to the voltage selector. Do not operate the adapter while the instrument is connected to the mains.
    Now take the two straight legs and push them firmly into the two holes in the corners (B). The three small holes in the legs must be to the back. Slide two bent legs into the two holes in the middle of the bottom plate. Place the book-shelf between the straight legs so that the metal pins enter the holes (C). Then fix the book-shelf by turning two knurled knobs clockwise. Plug the swell pedal into socket 1 (fig. 2) of the socket panel.
    Stand the instrument upright.
    Now remove the labelled screw (D) at the lower side, securing the reverberation unit and screw it into the hoe (E). When moving the instrument at any time replace this screw to protect the reverberation unit from damage.
    Connect the mains plug to the socket outlet.
    The instrument is now ready for use.

    Accessories / extra connections
    To the connecting panel at the righthand lower side of the Philicorda the following equipment can be connected.
    To socket 2 a record player or a tape/cassette recorder may be connected to accompany your playing.
    To socket 3 a Philips "Rotating Sound" effect unit EM 7004 can be connected.
    To socket 4 a tape/cassette recorder can be connected for recording the music you play.
    Also an amplifier system may be connected to this socket for playing in churches, large halls, or with orchestras.
    To socket 5 an extra loudspeaker with an impedance of 8 Ohm can be connected. The built-in loudspeakers are then automatically disconnected.
    To socket 6 a headphone may be connected. By means of switch X the headphone can be switched "on" or "off".
    Typenumbers of Philips headphones advised are LBB 9902/00.
    To socket 7 a cassette recorder can be connected when used in combination with remote control.

    Explanation of knobs and switches

    II. Octave couplers


    The rocker keys are switched on when they are depressed at the lower end and switched off when depressed at the upper end. If only the 8' switch is pressed, the Philicorda has a range from C to c3. If only switch 4' is pressed, each note sounds one octave higher, giving a range from c to c4. With only switch 2' pressed, each note becomes yet another octave higher, and the range is from c1 to c5. Several octave stops may be used simultaneously and then the range of the Philicorda is from C to c3 with additional overtones.


    III. Tones


    The tonal colour may be adjusted with the following possibilities:
    VOX I : round mellow voice
    VOX II : bright mellow voice
    VOX III : "fill in" voice with overtones
    VOX IV : reedy bright voice
    VOX V : round bright voice


    These may be used singly, or in combination to produce many different tone colours.


    IV. Reverberation (Reverbeo)


    It is often desirable, especially in small rooms, to add a certain amount of reverberation to counteract the damping effect of furnishings etc. By operating button IV reverberation is introduced and can be adjusted to taste using slide knob IV a.


    V. Vibrato


    Switching on the vibrato gives the instrument a "singing" quality. The extent of this effect can be varied by means of the vibrato regulator V a.


    VI. Keyboard Push-buttons (Vox-chord)


    Push-button 1: Normal position, in which the full keyboard is in the same chosen register and tonal colour.
    Push-button 2: The keyboard is no divided into a bass section (the lowest eighteen keys on the left) and a descant section. The bass section has a fixed accompainment registration in VOX I, pitch 4' and 2', while the descant section can be switched to any register and tone colour desired for playing the melody.
    Push-button 3: The eighteen keys of the bass section now play a complete chord, so making it very much easier for a beginner to play the instrument. By depressing one key a full chord is obtained. The names of the chords are indicated above the keys.


    VII. Remote control


    Position off: Casette recorder connected to socket 7 switched off.
    Position on: In this position the casette recorder is switched on.

    This sets the maximum volume that can be obtained when using the swell pedal.


    IX. Balance control


    This control is normally set to the centre position and has the function of controlling the relative volumes between bass and descant when the keyboard push-buttons 2 or 3 are pushed in.


    X. Headphone switch


    Position on: Music only via the headphone
    Position off: Music only via the loudspeakers (internal or external)


    Operation for normal playing


    Press down mains switch I. Pilot lamp IA lights up and Philicorda is switched on.
    Press one or more octave couplers II and register switches III.
    Push one of the push-buttons VI.
    If desired, the vibrato switch V may be pressed, and the intensity of the vibrato effect adjusted (slide knob V a).
    Set the volume control VIII to the maximum desired volume, with the swell pedal fully depressed. When playing adjust the volume to a suitable level by the swell pedal.
    If desired switch on the reverberation (switch IV) and adjust the intensity. For full keyboard playing set the balance control to the midway position. The Philicorda is switched off by depressing the mains switch once again.

    Die 12 Grundtöne werden weiterhin durch die bewährten Hartley Oszillatoren als Sinussignale erzeugt. Die Teilerketten sind aber durch Teiler ICs (SAJ 110 von ITT) ersetzt. Die Tastenkontakte wurden durch Diodenschalter ersetzt und in den Registerfiltern finden sich keine Induktivitäten (Spulen) mehr. Die 12 Töne der Oktave passen so auf kleine Platinen die oben im Bild hinter der Bedienplatte angebracht sind und schräg auf einer Busplatine gesteckt werden. Die elektronischen Tastenkontakte sind entsprechend auf der Busplatine die unter das Manual reicht untergebracht. Dadurch ist ca. nur die Hälfte des Gehäuses genutzt, da Filter und Verstärker auch noch hinter die Frontplatte passen. So wird der Rest des Gehäuses durch die 2 Lautsprecher (die nach untern abstrahlen!), der Hallspirale und dem Netztrafo ausgefüllt.


    Insgesamt klingt die Orgel im Gesamten steriler als die Vorgänger. Bei fehlenden Tönen oder Ein- oder Abschaltgeräuschen kann die Fehlerursache nicht nur bei den Tastenkontakten, sondern auch bei den Diodenschaltern liegen. Dies erschwert die Fehlersuche bei Störungen.


    Bei defekten Teiler ICs wird man schwer Ersatz bekommen und es steht eine komplizierte Lötarbeit an, man kann aber auch nach einer zweiten 754er als Ersatzteillager Ausschau halten.


    Wer gerne eine einmanualige Philicorda sein Eigen nennen möchte tut gut daran, eines der Vorgängermodelle zu erwischen. Auch wenn die Leistungsmerkmale des 754er Modells die gleichen seiner Vorgänger sind, so ist doch, vermutlich durch die andere Elektronik, der Sound eindeutig ärmer.


    Obwohl die Elektronik zum Zeitpunkt des Erscheinens sehr Service-freundlich war, so trifft dies heute, mangels Ersatzteilen, nicht mehr zu.
